Euro 2016 Could Be Played Without Fans In Attendance

Mar 25, 2016 1:22 PM

UEFA could play Euro 2016 behind closed doors if there is sufficient concern about terrorism, according to its executive committee vice-president Giancarlo Abete.

Authorities ruled out a cancellation or relocation of Euro 2016 after November's terror attacks in Paris, and France's Interior Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, re-emphasised the importance of high security at the tournament in light of Tuesday's deadly explosions in neighbouring Belgium.

"Security is the primary problem for all of us," Abate told Radio 24. "The sporting event is only secondary to the issue of people's security. For every sporting event, there is somebody responsible for public order who is above any other person responsible for the organisation of the sporting event.

"The last two World Cups, first in South Africa and then in Brazil, were both characterised by the risk of incidents and social tension, for different reasons. It is something that unfortunately the world of sport has to live with.

"We need to keep our heads held high and keep faith in the values we trust. We need professionalism and sensitivity to take certain decisions, by staging as many events as possible and postponing or cancelling them in the moment in which significant risks emerge."

Wayne Rooney Won't Be Automatic Starter For England

Mar 17, 2016 8:25 PM

Roy Hodgson says Wayne Rooney won't be a guaranteed starter for England at Euro 2016.

Rooney’s absence has led Hodgson to recall Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck to his 24-man squad for the friendlies against Germany and Holland this month after their injuries.

“I’m confident he’ll get fit and I won’t have a situation where I have the dilemma of 12 May arriving and him not being 100% fit but knowing he could make it by the time the tournament starts,” said Hodgson. “n an ideal world, I’d only take players who are mechanically fit and able to play. I’m confident he will be.

“But I’ve never said he’s an automatic starter. I’ve never said anyone is. Does he have a good chance with his track record, ability and experience? Of course he does. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he will be in the lineup: he might not have recovered to the best of his ability, or we might want to use different players or play in a different way. But he’s our captain and has been very important in that job in the last few years, and we will need his influence and ability on the field.

“That will have to be proven on the field of play. Wayne Rooney realises that. He knows that, if I think others are better or the right men to play in a particular way, he’ll accept that because he’s a footballer, our leader and our captain. If he’s fit, he’ll go. But not as an automatic starter.”

N'Golo Kante Called Up By France For International Break

Mar 16, 2016 11:04 PM

N'Golo Kante has received a call-up to the France squad for the international break.

Kante is expected to earn recognition ahead of Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin when Deschamps announces his party for the friendlies against Holland in Amsterdam on 25 March and Russia at the Stade de France four days later.

Kante wasn't featured for France's junior ranks and is already 24 without a call-up.

Kante will compete with players such as Paul Pogba, Blaise Matuidi, Yohan Cabaye, Moussa Sissoko and Lassana Diarra for a place in the starting lineup.

“We’ve been following him,” said Didier Deschamps. “At Caen he was putting in some good performances but with Leicester, who are having a surprising season, he’s been performing very well.

“There are experienced players [in the squad] and it’s up to them to continue performing well, but if there’s someone who can bring something different to the squad, I’ll select him.”

Van Gaal: Marcus Rashford Not Too Young For Euro 2016

Mar 4, 2016 9:02 PM

Louis van Gaal believes Marcus Rashford has the quality to join England for Euro 2016 despite being just 18 years old.

Rashford has scored four goals in his opening three matches with United and has also impressed with his contribution off the ball.

Roy Hodgson suggested the door is open to Rashford regarding the summer’s European Championship and Van Gaal agrees. “It is never too early. I have said that a lot of times. Age is not important. It’s the quality,” said the manager.
